The City of Norfolk put on its first Legends of Music Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony and Concert at the Roper Performing Arts Center on September 25, 2002. Jim Newsom was the Master of Ceremonies, and the Jim Newsom Quintet backed up inductee and rock and roll legend Gary U. S. Bonds on two of his biggest hits from the early '60s, "New Orleans" and "Quarter to Three."

Other honorees, all of whom were from the Hampton Roads region of Virginia, included Bruce Hornsby, Ruth Brown, Ella Fitzgerald, Pearl Bailey, Charlie Byrd, Dorothy Maynor, and Jim's uncle Tommy Newsom.
